The 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series ushered in a new-look championship, featuring the introduction of the Top 10 Shootout, the addition of new tracks and meet formats, a new points system, and new constructor rules. However the changes didnt soften the age-old rivalry between Ford and Holden, with the battle waged in earnest by Triple Eight Racings FG Falcons driven by Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, and Holden Racing Teams VE Commodores piloted by Garth Tander and new teammate Will Davison. After moving to HRT following a strong season with Dick Johnson Racing in 2008, Davison proved to be the revelation of the season. Overcoming a mediocre start to the year, Davison went on to chalk up wins at Sandown, Ipswich, Phillip Island and Bathurst to challenge series leader Jamie Whincup for the title, but the reigning champ rose to the occasion and reeled off three straight victories late in the season, taking his round wins tally to eleven for the year and securing back-to-back series championships.
