Australia is the worlds largest island nation with a coastline of infinite variety and stunning natural beauty. In the 19th Century, the alarming number of shipwrecks off the Australian coast led to the construction and manning of these beacons of hope and welcoming light. Australia's first lighthouse was completed in 1818 and thus began an amazing history of the construction of these towering structures marvels of architecture, engineering and building skill in some of the Earth's most remote, un-spoilt and inhospitable places. This program explores many of these fascinating, romantic and dramatic lighthouses. The folklore and memories of the Australian lighthouses and their keepers will live forever.
