Plays were often adapted for film and Alfred Hitchcock was the unlikely choice for the movie version of Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Hitchcock was interested because of the mood, characters, humour and pace of the strange piece. This 1930 motion picture was Hitchcock's second sound film and was produced with the Irish Players. Critics raved about the picture upon its release. Hitchcock, who with his wife Alma Reville wrote the screenplay, was ultimately unhappy with the finished work because it was based on Sean O'Casey's success. An impoverished family is about to inherit some money during the Dublin uprising. The money does not come through as planned and they are distraught. The daughter is soon to give birth to an illegitimate child and their son is accused as an informer.
