Originally released in 2005, Z was a hugely successful album for the band. Not only was it #1 on Metacritic's top albums of 2005 but it opened the band up to a new audience. Produced by John Leckie (Stone Roses) it went onto sell half a million copies worldwide. On Z, MMJ's traditional influences are present -- the folk, blues, and country tones of Neil Young & the Band, shaded by contemporaries like Radiohead and Mercury Rev. Z is intuitive, intensely creative, classicist-minded, nearly flawless. Mojo in its 5 star review said "With Z, My Morning Jacket have left their comfort zone, assumed the mantle of firebrands, and delivered a truly momentous work".
